Abstract
The year 2005 appears to be one of the most challenging times
for the North American cable industry. Both major
direct-to-home services have announced the launch of multiple
new satellites over the next couple of years designed to
attack cables’ strongholds of local programming and on-demand
services. Two major telcos have already committed billions of
dollars towards the construction of video infrastructures;
others are expected to announce similar plans within the year.
Cable MSOs are taking this new round of competition very
seriously and have their own plans to protect and grow
subscriber base.
