TDM Services Over Packet Based Networks

Abstract
This document describes the capabilities of Enhanced Ethernet, represented as IEEE 802.17 Resilient
Packet Ring (RPR) technology, to transport TDM traffic over a packet based infrastructure. Scientific Atlanta’s
implementation of RPR leverages its higher service level awareness to support the demanding requirements
of TDM services.

The paper will contrast RPR technology with the capabilities of “plain old” Ethernet (commonly referred to
as IEEE 802.3). Unlike RPR, Ethernet was designed specifically for data networks and does not support stratum
timed circuits, nor does it address any of the carrier-class requirements for TDM circuits such as protection,
recovery, fault isolation, configuration, accounting, provisioning, and security.
